“I don’t know your pastor and I’m not real familiar with your church but I know fruit when I see it and if this is the fruit of that ministry, that’s a good ministry praise God. You are just being persecuted.” Curious. So you KNOW our fruit is good becauzzzzz? Uh, we dress stylishly? We are well spoken and have manners? We can debate the Scriptures in a totally parrot-like way? (Which, since you “don’t know our pastor”, you would not know that we are programmed in our fellowship meetings to repeat the phrase from pastors recent months sermons that inspired us.) We drive nice cars? Our kids are well spanked and therefore don’t act badly in public? We are drilled to grill others on the authenticity of their personal salvation? (Although most of us are just plain religious hypocrites.) We are groomed to stand out in every way noticeable-lust of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life. Cars, women, athletic kids, jobs, public relations, religious zeal. Anything and everything to lure you in to bee consumed by the insatiable appetite for power and idol worshipping young people. Pastor. Pastor. Pastor. Pastor. etc.
“…not real familiar with your church…” Well. Let’s tell ya. We have had the IRS on our tail for bad things. We are currently being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office. Several of our deacons and pastors have had, ahem, sexual indiscretions while in ministry. We have personally destroyed dozens of families by separating them from one another. Extra-marital affairs? Lying? Fornication? Gambling? Pedophilia? Divorce? Party hardy? “…that’s a good ministry. Praise God!” Yikes. Pastor, I gotta wonder – are you telling tall tales again? Did somebody REALLLLLLY say that?
But God says, “Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance” (Matthew 3:8). “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10). “For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth” (Ephesians 5:9). “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

As a reminder, I wrote this brief little comment on Facebook when I shared this Tactics piece in 2015:
“And Tactics keeps speaking the truth about CT… the video/fruitcake song is so very funny; unfortunately, the putrid fruit of Calvary Temple is not at all funny, and is a sin… keep lying, Bob… Jesus will reveal you for the wolf that you are…”
Eleven years later, maybe my tone has changed, and my heart has definitely been changed, but the message remains the same.
As a note, the video referenced in the original article is no longer available. However, the words spoken from Bob Scott’s pulpit — and the questions raised by Tactics’ commentary — remain worth examining.
Read this opening statement from Tactics’ piece, If This Is the Fruit…:
“I don’t know your pastor and I’m not real familiar with your church, but I know fruit when I see it and if this is the fruit of that ministry, that’s a good ministry. Praise God. You are just being persecuted.”
Whoa. Stop the train!
That statement deserves careful consideration.
How can someone declare that they “know the fruit” of a ministry while also admitting they are “not real familiar” with that ministry?
What exactly is the fruit being examined?
Is fruit success? Is fruit a polished appearance? Is fruit nice clothing, nice cars, well-spoken members, successful careers, or children who appear well-behaved?
And that’s putting Tactics’ words in a much more gentle light.
Scripture gives us a very different measurement.
Jesus said:
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
Matthew 7:20
Fruit is not simply what is visible on the outside. Fruit reveals what is being produced on the inside.
The Apostle Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…”
Galatians 5:22-23
Paul also reminds believers:
“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
Colossians 1:10
So, we must ask:
If this is the fruit, what kind of tree is producing it?
The statement praising Calvary Temple’s “fruit” was made without knowledge of the history, concerns, and serious allegations surrounding this ministry.
How shortsighted — and how dangerous — that conclusion was.
At that time, and even continuing today, there were significant issues being raised, including IRS scrutiny resulting in penalties, an active and ongoing investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office regarding allegations of child sexual abuse, and accounts from former members describing spiritual harm, broken relationships, and destructive patterns of control.
These are not the characteristics of the fruit described in Scripture.
A ministry is not validated because people appear successful.
A ministry is not validated because people know the right words.
A ministry is not validated because people can defend a pastor.
A ministry is measured by truth, righteousness, humility, repentance, and fruit that reflects Jesus Christ.
What I appreciate about this particular post from Tactics is that it captured a significant moment in time when the concerns surrounding Calvary Temple were no longer isolated conversations happening behind closed doors.
Former members had already been publicly sharing their experiences since 2008. But by 2015, newspaper articles had been published. Media outlets were conducting interviews with people who had left Calvary Temple. Individuals — including myself — were standing outside Calvary Temple every Sunday for a year, peacefully protesting and calling attention to the serious concerns that had been raised.
This was not simply a matter of people “starting to question” what they were seeing.
Many people had already recognized that the image being presented did not match the reality being experienced by those who had been hurt.
The testimonies, documentation, media coverage, and public actions were all pointing to the same troubling question:
Was the fruit being celebrated truly the fruit that Jesus described?
And so, I will close this commentary with the same question Tactics asked: Come on, Bob… did someone really say that?
Over the past almost two decades, many people have left Calvary Temple, and many stories have been shared. God sees what people cannot see, and God continues to bring things into the light.
“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.”
Luke 12:2
I will continue to watch. I will continue to write. I will continue to stand as a watchman on the wall — not because I seek attention, but because truth matters and because people matter.
To those reading this: please use wisdom and discernment. If you value your family, your children, and your spiritual well-being, carefully examine the leadership and fruit of any church you attend.
Do not ignore warning signs.
Do not dismiss the experiences of those who have been hurt.
And above all, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus Christ — not on any man.
To Bob Scott: the answer is not pride, image, or control. The answer is humility and repentance before a holy God.
Bow the knee.
Acknowledge what has been done.
Seek forgiveness.
True repentance begins when we stop defending ourselves and start submitting ourselves to God.
Keep your distance from Bob Scott and Calvary Temple, located in Sterling, Virginia. Never forget that allegations of child sexual abuse involving individuals connected with Calvary Temple remain the subject of an active and ongoing investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), an investigation that remains open to this day.
If you value your family and the lives of your children, if you value your own spiritual well-being, please exercise wisdom and discernment. Do not ignore serious concerns. Do not allow yourself or your loved ones to become another name added to a growing list of those who have experienced harm.
For my readers and residents of Loudoun County: there are many wonderful churches in the area that faithfully proclaim Jesus Christ and His Word. Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia, is one example.
Finally, if you are reading this and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, today is the perfect day to call upon Him and be saved. Knowing where you will spend eternity is the most precious gift we can ever receive.
